In the first half of this year, the construction of supercharging stations in major "supercharging cities" across the country is accelerating, and the construction progress of supercharging stations (piles) in important cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen, and Chongqing has exceeded half. Based on the national construction situation, the proportion of newly added overcharging piles has exceeded 25%.
Compared with supercharging models, industry data shows that in the first half of 2025, there will be about 430 new energy passenger vehicles on sale in China, while the number of 800V high-voltage architecture passenger vehicles on sale is about 70. The proportion of vehicles that support 800V high-voltage fast charging is about 16%, and the penetration rate is still relatively low.
In the short term, there is a certain supply-demand gap between the models equipped with 800V high-voltage platforms and the rapidly growing supercharging stations.
On the one hand, the 800V high-voltage platform is mainly designed for mid to high end car models priced over 200000 yuan, with a certain consumer threshold, and price has become one of the constraints on the popularization of supercharging technology.
On the other hand, although the construction of supercharging stations has accelerated, the demand for supercharging varies greatly in different scenarios, which cannot meet the real needs of supercharging piles. Long distance energy replenishment scenarios such as high-speed service areas and transportation hubs have a stronger demand for supercharging, but the construction progress is slower, while the utilization rate of supercharging in community and commercial areas is lower.
To further promote supercharging technology, charging station companies are accelerating the construction of supercharging in different scenarios, as well as the transformation of ordinary charging stations. On the part of car companies, they are reducing costs through self-developed core components, promoting the penetration of 800V models into the price range of 150000 to 200000 yuan, and synchronously laying out self built supercharging networks to accelerate the promotion of supercharging models.
Battery companies are also an important part of promoting the popularization of supercharging. At present, battery companies have formed deep ties with car companies, customizing the development of supercharging battery packs through vehicle platform, spatial layout, and performance goals to accelerate vehicle entry.
According to incomplete statistics from Gaogong Lithium Battery, leading companies such as CATL, EVE Energy, Ruipu Lanjun, Zhongchuang Chuanghang, Honeycomb Energy, Guoxuan High tech, Xinwangda, and Juwan Technology Research have already deployed supercharging batteries and are currently accelerating the matching of different brand models.
In the long run, the construction speed of supercharging piles is expected to catch up with that of supercharging batteries and 800V high-voltage platforms, and the technology gap of pile driving will be further shortened.
Automobile companies collaborate to accelerate pile construction
The high construction cost and long payback period of supercharging stations have to some extent limited their promotion. The cost of a single supercharging pile can reach 150000-40000 yuan, and the construction cost of a single supercharging station is about 1.5-5 million yuan, with a payback period of about 6-8 years. In contrast, the cost of ordinary fast charging piles is only 10% -20% of that of overcharging piles.
To solve the problem of high costs, local governments encourage the construction of supercharging stations through policy guidance, special subsidies, special bonds, and long-term venue leasing. At the same time, they promote the matching of photovoltaics and energy storage to solve the problem of grid impact caused by supercharging stations.
As of the end of June, Shenzhen has built and put into use 1057 supercharging stations (annual target of 2000), Chongqing's digital charging platform has connected 1468 supercharging stations and 2270 supercharging piles (annual target of 2000 supercharging stations and 4000 supercharging piles), and Beijing has built 517 supercharging stations (annual target of 1000).
In terms of charging station enterprises, Special Electric has built more than 1700 liquid cooled supercharging stations nationwide, deployed more than 5700 liquid cooled terminals, and single gun power covers 400kW to 600kW. In April last year, Star Charging announced a ten-year construction plan for supercharging stations, promoting 10000 liquid cooled stations in 126 cities across the country.
In terms of car companies, they are currently promoting the popularization of supercharging technology in passenger cars by building their own supercharging stations and launching affordable supercharging models: BYD Megawatt Flash Charging Station, Extreme Krypton 1.2MW Fully Liquid Cooled Supercharging Station, Tesla V4 Supercharging Station, Xiaopeng S5 Supercharging Station, Ideal Shuttle Supercharging Station, Lantu VP1000 Megawatt Supercharging Station, etc.
In addition, Xiaopeng has set a goal of building 3000 ultra fast charging stations by 2025, and Jike plans to build 2000 extreme charging stations and 10000 extreme charging piles nationwide by 2026.
In terms of exploring Volkswagen models with supercharging technology, car companies such as BYD, Geely, Changan, Aion, Chery, etc. are promoting the penetration of 800V models into the price range of 150000 to 200000 yuan. Zero Run has even launched 129800 yuan models that support 800V fast charging.
The collaborative construction of supercharging stations by car companies has to some extent alleviated the financial pressure and technical adaptation difficulties of a single entity, while accelerating the construction of supercharging networks.
Innovation of fast charging batteries in battery companies
Supercharging and solid-state technology have become the consensus directions for technological evolution in the battery industry.
At present, the landing speed of rechargeable batteries is faster than that of solid-state batteries. The core goal of supercharging technology is to achieve a "refueling experience equivalent to that of fuel vehicles" through "short time fast charging", and its core battery technology direction is high rate.
Charging for 10 minutes with a range of 400 kilometers is the main slogan for battery companies to lay out supercharging batteries, corresponding to a power battery rate performance of 4C or above.
The high rate performance of power batteries above 4C cannot be achieved without breakthroughs in key materials, including nanomaterialization and coating technology of positive electrode materials, modification of negative electrode materials, and research and development of ultra-high conductivity electrolytes. The purpose is to optimize lithium-ion channels and make them run faster.
It can be confirmed that overcharging has become an important technological competition point for battery companies. Different battery companies have chosen different forms and technologies such as cylindrical, square, and laminated to achieve differentiated competition, including Ningde Times Shenxing Battery, Juwan Technology 6C Battery, Honeycomb Energy Second Generation Dragon Scale Battery, Ruipu Lanjun 5C Supercharging Battery, and Zhongchuang Chuanghang 800V 5C Medium Nickel High Voltage Cylindrical Battery.
From the perspective of the progress of super charged battery matching, CATL is at the forefront, and Shenxing Battery has been equipped with multiple brands such as Lantu, Jihu, Chery, Xiaomi, and Jike.
Production capacity is also a major factor affecting the entry of rechargeable batteries into vehicles. Honeycomb Energy is accelerating the mass production of its 6C short blade fast charging battery with its new high-speed lamination process.
At present, some battery companies also choose to achieve supercharging performance through semi-solid/solid-state technology in one step. The oxide semi-solid state battery developed by Qingtao Energy and Zhiji supports 900V overcharging, with a range of 400 kilometers after 10 minutes of charging.
In terms of overseas enterprises, Toyota and Panasonic plan to achieve mass production of all solid state batteries by 2027. Both parties have successfully developed a solid-state battery prototype with an energy density of 500Wh/kg, which is 50% higher than existing lithium batteries. The charging time has been shortened to 10 minutes, and the range can reach 1000 kilometers.
In the future, with the maturity of technology, cost reduction, and the determination of car manufacturers to scale up, supercharging batteries and 800V high-voltage platforms will achieve further growth in vehicle speed; Under the promotion of policy mandatory standards, popularization of liquid cooling technology, and coordinated innovation of the power grid, the construction of supercharging piles will enter a high-density coverage stage.
