74.2% of lithium iron phosphate installed capacity reaches a new high

According to market data, the market share of lithium iron phosphate installed capacity exceeded 70% in April this year, and by August this year, the installed capacity share of lithium iron phosphate further reached 74.2%, setting a new high for the installed capacity share.


As two technological routes for electric vehicles, ternary batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries are increasingly showing a trend of differentiation. The market share of lithium iron phosphate batteries and ternary batteries is fluctuating, which also reflects the structural changes in the automotive market caused by downstream consumer demand behind the expanding new energy vehicle market.


From the perspective of influencing factors, the expansion of the market share of lithium iron phosphate batteries is due to multiple factors.


Firstly, lithium iron phosphate batteries have significant cost advantages compared to ternary batteries, and this cost advantage is further reflected in the trend towards high nickel batteries. In addition, since the beginning of this year, the price of lithium carbonate, the core raw material of lithium iron phosphate batteries, has repeatedly decreased. Recently, the price of lithium carbonate has even fallen below 70000 yuan/ton, providing room for price reduction for electric vehicles equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries.


Correspondingly, the cost advantage of lithium iron phosphate batteries has brought a price advantage to electric vehicles, further increasing the market penetration rate of new energy vehicles. Nowadays, the price of electric vehicles has dropped within the range of 100000 yuan, and the audience of electric vehicles has greatly increased. The sales boost brought by the decrease in electric vehicle prices has in turn driven the increase in installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries.


Secondly, there is structural differentiation in the car market, with PHEV models becoming the main driver of electric vehicle sales after pure electric vehicles. As a hybrid model of oil and electricity, the use of lithium iron phosphate battery packs can promote the same price of oil and electricity, thereby increasing the installed proportion of lithium iron phosphate batteries in the terminal market. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, sales of PHEV models increased by 84.2% year-on-year from January to August this year, and the proportion of PHEV model sales also showed a trend of increasing month by month.


From the perspective of PHEV model attributes, it combines the advantages of both gasoline and electric vehicles, balancing long and short range while having price advantages, and is favored by consumers. As a transitional route towards pure electric vehicles, PHEV models have gradually become the choice of more and more car companies, and the market also believes that PHEV models may become mainstream in the market for a period of time.


Thirdly, the continuous improvement of the performance of lithium iron phosphate batteries has led to an increasing acceptance of lithium iron phosphate batteries among the general public. Firstly, there is a breakthrough in energy density for lithium iron phosphate batteries. Although there is still a difference in energy density compared to ternary batteries, through a series of new materials and processes, electric vehicles equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries can gradually meet consumers' requirements for range.

Based on the above factors, it can be concluded that the increasing proportion of installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries is driven by the trend of popularization and popularization of new energy vehicles. The reduction of battery prices and the improvement of battery performance are coexisting goals. As the proportion of new energy vehicle sales continues to increase, the installed market of lithium iron phosphate batteries will also continue to expand.
